Fabrication lead oxide production

The cast grids are made into battery anode and cathode plates by the application of a lead oxide paste of 70 percent lead oxide (PbO) and 30 percent metallic lead. Lead ingots are tumbled in a ball mill with airproducing lead oxide and fine lead dust (referred to as leady oxide ). Leady oxide particulates are entrained in the mill exhaust air, which is treated sequentially by a cyclone separator and fabric filter. The used fabric filter bags are shipped to a RCRA-permitled commercially operated ha2ardous waste landfill located in Colorado. The leady oxide production process does not produce wastewater. 

Lead oxide has been widely used in the glazing of pottery in flint -type glasses and in solder glasses, but these materials contain no carbon and have no visible structure In the process being reported, carbon contained in the cotton is required for formation of the new chemical structure and for retention of the fabric weave pattern and shape in the new products ... 

The battery components are fabricated and processed as shown in the flowsheets of Fig. 23.10. The major starting material is highly purified lead. The lead is used for the production of alloys (for subsequent conversion to grids) and for the production of lead oxides [for subsequent conversion first to paste and ultimately to the lead dioxide positive active material (Fig. 23.10a) and the sponge lead negative active material].
