Ring closure to an episulfide is a feasible reaction for thiocarbonyl ylides. In most cases, the sulfur is further extruded under the reaction conditions to afford an olefin as the final product. This cascade transformation has been utilized by Danishefsky and co-workers in their total synthesis of ( )-indolizomycin (Scheme 16)." In the Danishefsky s approach, diazo ketone 137 is treated with a catalytic amount of Rh2(OAc)4 to generate thiocarbonyl ylide 138, which cyclizes to give episulfide 139. This episulfide isomerizes to mercaptan 140, which is then desulfurized by partially deactivated W-2 Raney nickel. [Pg.167]

The simplest type of cascade extruder consists of two screws, one mounted above the other, the output from the first feeding the second. Interconnection is by a passage that can be vented to allow volatiles to escape. The screws are not in direct contact and can be driven at different speeds, the output from each of them being set at an optimum with the help of valves. [Pg.166]

TSE s have been used to prepare new families of engineering materials of high performance, polymers and their blends. Polycondensation, free radical, anionic and cationic polymerizations were conducted to obtain, e.g., PA, PEST, POM, styrenic or acrylic resins. When the reaction is conducted in a low molecular weight liquid (e.g., solution or emulsion polymerization), usually devolatilization and compounding are carried out in a cascade second extruder. Functionalization and chemical modifications have been performed in TSE on virtually all polymers. [Pg.631]

Due to the fine structure of up to 1200 cells/in the process is very sensitive to interruptions. Therefore during start up and also after changing the screen pack or the die plate there is a high reject rate of product. For a higher rate of yield, more and more often two extruders, each 5 to 6 barrels in length, are used which are arranged successively in a cascade (Fig. 18). [Pg.280]

Wang, et al. reported an organocatalylic direct inverse electron demand Diels-Alder reaction of ketones 140 with l,2,4,5-tetrazinesl41, Scheme 3.46 [62]. Examination of the results of catalyst screening revealed that L-proline seems to be the best organocatalyst tried in this process. Several steps were involved in the cascade reactions inverse electron demand Diels-Alder reaction of 1,2,4,5-tetrazines 141 with the enamines, derived from ketones and L-proline, followed by a subsequent retro-Diels-Alder process to extrude and elimination to afford pyridazines 142. [Pg.213]

The major advantage of the cascade devolatilizing system is that the control of the output of the first stage to the pressure generating capability of the second stage is much better than in a single extruder devolatilization system. Obviously, the cost will be higher, and the decision for one system or the other must be based on the importance of improved flexibility and controllability. [Pg.562]
