Like many other herbal extracts, valerian extract is very hygroscopic. Inclusion into tablets raises stability issues. Many of the aromatic herbs are well-known for their hardiness and for the lack of attention that insect pests pay them. Several scientific studies confirm the repellent effect of herbal extract sprays, long relied upon by organic gardeners. 

The next chapter describes the basic physical and biotechnological processes which are today available for the production of flavourings and flavour extracts. These range from more traditional methods such as extraction and distillation to more recent developments, e.g. supercritical fluid extraction, spray and freeze drying as well as microencapsulation, and include the rapidly increasing field of biotechnology. 

Precautions during the application of paint depend on the methods of application and curing used. Minimizing contact with solvent vapour requires air extraction spray operations will be carried out in spray booths where contaminated air and excess spray droplets are treated. For some materials such as isocyanates, spray operators may be required to wear air-fed hoods. Factory environments are now regulated for all emissions including vapours, dusts and liquid and solid wastes, and these must be monitored and controlled.

Similar to DESI, direct analysis in real time (DART) is another relatively new technique used to quickly and reliably analyse CWA nerve agents in the field quickly and reliably. DART is an atmospheric pressure technique that does not require vapor pressure, extractions, sprays, or sample... 

A sample to be examined by electrospray is passed as a solution in a solvent (made up separately or issuing from a liquid chromatographic column) through a capillary tube held at high electrical potential, so the solution emerges as a spray or mist of small droplets (i.e., it is nebulized). As the droplets evaporate, residual sample ions are extracted into a mass spectrometer for analysis. 

The earliest large-scale continuous industrial extraction equipment consisted of mixer—settlers and open-spray columns. The vertical stacking of a series of mixer—settlers was a feature of a patented column in 1935 (96) in which countercurrent flow occurred because of density difference between the phases, avoiding the necessity for interstage pumping. This was a precursor of the agitated column contactors which have been developed and commercialized since the late 1940s. There are several texts (1,2,6,97—98) and reviews (99—100) available that describe the various types of extractors. 

A modification of the conventional soy protein isolate process has been investigated on a small pilot-plant scale. It is based on the absorption of water from the aqueous protein after extraction at pH 8.5 using temperature-sensitive polyisopyropylacrylamide gels, followed by spray drying to give a 96% protein isolate (111). 

In one extractor (FMC Inc.), the fmit is located between two cups having sharp-edged metal tubes at their base. The upper cup descends and the many fingers on each cup mesh to express the juice as the tubes cut holes in the top and bottom of the fmit. On further compression, the rag, seeds, and juice sacs are compressed into the bottom tube between the two plugs of peel. A piston moves up inside the bottom tube forcing the juice through perforations in the tube wall. A simultaneous water spray washes the peel oil expressed during extraction away from the peel as an oil—water emulsion the peel oil is recovered separately from the emulsion. 

The vegetable-tanning materials are commercially extracted using hot water. The extraction is normally done in countercurrent extractors that permit the final removal of the extracts with fresh water. The dilute extracts are then evaporated to the desired concentration in multiple effect evaporators. Some extracts may be further dried by spray drying or any other means that proves effective without overheating the extract. Extract preparation depends on the type of extract, the si2e of the operation, and the desired concentration of the final product. 

Pine Oil. This oil is obtained by extraction and fractionation or by steam distillation of the wood of Pinuspalustris Mill, and other species. Most of the oil is produced ia the southeastern United States. The composition of the oil depends on the fractions chosen, but the chief constituents are terpene alcohols, mainly terpiaeol. Piae oil finds use as a germicide ia disiafectants and soaps as an ingredient ia iasecticides, deodorants, poHshes, sweepiag compounds, and catde sprays and as raw material for the manufacture of perfumery-grade terpiaeol [8000-41 -7], anethole [104-46-1], fenchone (137), and camphor (35).
