Extended formulation

Below, all subproblems will be dealt with in selected examples that we consider to be most illustrative more advanced and more extended formulations have already been presented in literature. [Pg.475]

Consequently, a parallel alignment of smectic layers is linearly stable against undulations even if the perpendicular alignment might be more preferable due to some thermodynamic considerations. As we have shown in Fig. 8, this rigorous result of standard smectic A hydrodynamics is weakened in our extended formulation of smectic A hydrodynamics. When the director can show independent dynamics, an appropriate anisotropy of the viscosity tensor can indeed reduce the threshold values of an undulation instability. [Pg.128]

The extended formulation of the exclusion principle embraces Pauli s original statement, without invalidating it in any way... [Pg.64]

Thus, with these proofs two important additions to the previous traditional understanding of the JTE emerged (1) Any polyatomic system may be subject to the JTE, and (2) if there are instabilities and distortions of high-symmetry configurations, they are due to, and only to the JTE. Together with the previously achieved understanding of the role of quadratic terms of the vibronic coupling, the extended formulation of the JTE that includes the latest achievements in this field is as follows [1,8] ... [Pg.8]

The extended formulation of the JTE above - the law of instability - states that the necessary and sufficient condition for instability of the high-symmetry configuration of any polyatomic system is the presence of two or more electronic states... [Pg.19]

The analogy calculations with the turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers other than unity are based on various empirical relations for these dimensionless parameters. However, comparisons with experimental data show that the parameter values of S c = Pr = 1 are good first approximations for most practical applications. No significant improvements have been obtained by the extended formulations. [Pg.634]

The first term in this expression represents the contribution from the uncatalyzed reaction and the second term, that from the catalyzed reaction. At typical reaction temperatures (above 25°C), the catalyzed reaction dominates even at very low catalyst levels (0.1 mM) because of the much larger pre-exponential factor. Equation 5 can be used to provide rate constants which could reasonably predict conversion vs time at a given temperature up to at least 60% reacted. The accuracy of the prediction will decrease above about 75° C since this requires extrapolation outside the temperature range in which the fitting was done. Also use of the rate constants at high conversion are likely to be less satisfactory due to the discontinuity observed in the reaction profile for the extended formulation at 55 to 60fc reacted and a variety of other factors (side reactions, gelation) that are likely to become important especially above 90% reacted. [Pg.158]

The discontinuity in the DSC reaction peak that leads to the second maximum is believed to be caused by the onset of phase separation. Visual observations of specimens (extended formulation) during DSC scans revealed that the first indication of opacity occurs slightly (within 3 ) after the onset of this discontinuity. Small samples and slow heating (5°C/min) were used when making these observations to reduce the time lag between thermal changes in the sample and detection by the DSC. [Pg.158]

As for practical applications of the generalized JTE in its extended formulation, they are numerous and continuously increasing involving such important fields as molecular shapes, stereochemistry, chemical activation and mechanism of chemical reactions, all-range spectroscopy, electron-conformational changes in biology, impurity physics, lattice formation and phase transitions, etc. [1]. [Pg.347]

Solving the superadditive dual problem is as hard as solving the original primal problem. It is possible to reformulate the superadditive dual problem as a linear program (the number of variables in the formulation is exponential in the size of the original problem). For small or specially structured problems this can provide some insight. The interested reader is referred to Nemhauser and Wolsey [59] for more details. An indirect way is through the use of an extended formulation. [Pg.267]

Since the linear relaxation of the above integer program admits fractional solutions, it is natural to look for a stronger formulation. Bikhchandani and Ostroy [12] offer one using an extended formulation. [Pg.268]
