Expert view

The media provides information regarding the nature and extend of risks. Every day risks, ue underestimated by the public, because much attention is directed to largely publicized risks. The perception of a given risk is amplified by "outrage factors Inch can make people feel even small risks are unacceptable. Experts view the perception of risk differently tlian lay people as a result a serious hazard may be underestimated.

The area interconnects several scientific disciplines (agriculture, biochemistry, chemistry, technology, environmental sciences, forestry, etc.), which makes it very difficult to have an expert view on the complicated interaction. Therefore, the idea of creating a series of scientific books, focusing on specific topics concerning renewable resources, has been very opportune and can help to clarify some of the underlying connections in this area. 

Military explosives safety is a complex technical matter and, of course, we need to understand it. However, technical understanding is not enough and the world will no longer simply accept the experts view without logic. We need to assess the risks and quantify the benefits more clearly than perhaps we did in the past.

Figure 11.9 shows that it is possible to image a phospholipid membrane bilayer structure with the dark lines corresponding to the polar phosphor head groups (Sagalowicz et al. 2003). The membrane thickness can be estimated as shown by the intensity line scan in Figure 11.9. Interpretation of the images needs an expert view since various artifacts such as beam damage and surface contamination can lead to misinterpretations (Won 2004).

As ever, the difficulty for the industry is to balance capacity with expected demand, although the latter is extremely difficult to predict even 5 years ahead because it is so strongly affected by the world s economy which is very cyclical with a boom inevitably followed by a slump. The diversity of experts views clearly illustrates the difficulties. Views on ethylene in the mid 1990s range from predictions of significant over-capacity in Europe to a worldwide shortage. Clearly the actual outcome depends on how the market for this product expands (or contracts). 

Last but not least, given the critical expert views presented in this book and its practical drug discovery orientation, it is hoped that this publication will represent another important step forward in further defining and supporting chem(o)infor-matics as a scientific discipline at the interface between chemistry, computer science, and drug discovery.

Unexpected start up, etc. Apparently it seems the task is not very difficult but in reality it needs experts view to foresee hazards and interactions are not so easily forthcoming. 

Although human wonder and minds are the sources of uncertainty in forms of vagueness, dubiousness, incompleteness they also serve to overcome problems through human experience, expert views (Chap. 5). The uncertainty concepts in understanding complex problems are dependent on observations, experiences and conscious expert views. When problems are solved, there is always remaining uncertainty that paves the way for future developments. Thus, scientific solutions cannot be taken as absolute truths in positivistic manner. 

In direct contrast to classical modeling styles, which take training data and generate opaque, impenetrable models, fuzzy logic lets one rely on the experience of people who already understand the system (expert views). 

It is possible to make predictions either by crisp logic mathematical models or expert views. The major question that arises is presented in Fig. 5.2.
