The early observations consisted of a review of enthalpies of formation of hydrocarbons and their stabilities from F. D. Rossini, Chem. Rev., 27, 1 (1940). The exception we know of is the relative stabilities of alkyl lithiums where methyl lithium is stabilized relative to the -alkyl family (and exhibits a methyl deviation opposite to the methyl halides) and the secondary and tertiary lithium alkyls are destabilized.
