Expanded Extracts. There are a wide variety of solvents, with very different properties, used in pharmaceutical processing. LYOGUARD trays were tested with selected, commonly used processing solvents (Table 4). [Pg.355]

A compander is a turbo expander which uses the expander work to directly drive a process compressor. The expander extracts energy from the expanding refrigerant gas, reducing the gas temperature. It uses this energy to compress warm refrigerant gas upstream of the economizer. Over the past decades, over one thousand cryogenic turbo expanders and companders have been installed and run for Air Separation Unit (ASU) service, and there is extensive experience in hydrocarbon applications. [Pg.349]

Development of the turbo-expander process allowed design and construction of plants for recovery of liquid ethane, as well as the heavier hydrocarbon components. The turbo-expander extracts work from the gas during expansion from a high pressure to a lower pressure. Because of the work extraction the gas is cooled, and, by means of suitable heat exchange, temperatures as low as — 150°F (— 100°C) can easily be achieved. In 1975, the first successful production of MAbs was reported (44). By fusing normal antibody-producing cells with a B-ceU tumor (myeloma), hybridoma cell lines resulted which produced antibodies having a specificity to only one deterrninant on an antigen ie, all the antibodies produced from the cell line are identical. These studies resulted in a standard approach to MAb production. In this approach, the hybridoma cells are produced in large quantities in culture and screened to select specific clones producing the desired MAb using an appropriate assay. The selected clones are then expanded in culture (or in animals), the cells are collected, and the MAbs are extracted and purified. [Pg.28]

Video-Enhanced Contrast. This technique is more expensive but much more effective than any other contrast-enhancing technique (15). Since the 1970s, the development of video processing of microscopical images has resulted in electronic control of contrast. As Shinya InouH, author of a classic text in the field, states "We can now see objects that are far too thin to be resolved, and extract clear images from scenes that appeared too fuzzy, too pale, or too dim, or that appeared to be nothing but noise" (16). The depth of the in-focus field can now be expanded or confined, very thin but very sharp optical sections can be produced, and a vertical succession of these images can be accumulated to reconstmct thicker stmctures in three dimensions (16). [Pg.330]

RoUer-top cards have five to seven sets of workers and strippers to mix and card the fibers carried on the cylinder. The multiple transferring action and re-introduction of new groupings of fibers to the carding zones provides a doubling effect which enhances web uniformity. Stationary-top cards have strips of metallic clothing mounted on plates positioned concavely around the upper periphery of the cylinder. Simplified Cycle. A simplified fossil steam cycle appears in Figure 19. The water accumulates in the bottom of the condenser, called the hotweU. It goes through a feed pump to pressurize it. The pressurized water passes through one or more feedwater heaters, which raise the temperature. The water then enters the boiler where heat from the fuel converts it to steam. The steam expands through the engine, usually a turbine, which extracts work. In the middle of the turbine some of the steam is extracted to supply heat to the feedwater heater.
