The advantages offered by the use of expanded polypropylene in automotive bumper cores and other applications are considered, and its properties are compared with other materials traditionally used in such applications in terms of impact strength, energy absorption, resilience, and compressive strength. 

The article describes the process of producing expanded polypropylene foam parts with a solid integral skin on one side, citing a bicycle helmet moulded from BASF s Neopolen EPP bead, as an illustration. The self-skinning EPP process reqnires some modification of standard beadmoulding equipment, needing an extra steam chamber. Automotive interior trim is a potential application for the process. 

Details are given of planned capacity increases in expandable polypropylene by the JSP Gronp, in both the US and Europe. A doubling of combined prodnction capacities is planned for the material which is nsed in the foam of automotive bumper core materials.

A similar approach has been used by Celanese Corp. to make Celegard . an expanded polypropylene membrane (see Figure 2.4). The stretching creates elongated pores measuring 0.02 by 0.20 ju or 0.04 by 0.40 ju. The low flow rates of this membrane limit applications primarily to battery separators and airvents. 

Perhaps the ultimate low-weight use of foamed POs in vehicles comes in the form of expanded polypropylene (EPP) bead materials, which can be molded into cushioning materials for sound-dampening, seating, storage systems, energy absorption, and occupant protection. A couple of recent uses of EPP are covered in Case 13.2.

The production of molded articles made of particle foams such as expanded polypropylene (EPP) or expanded polystyrene (EPS, also known under the brand name Styropore) is carried out by welding individual foam particles together into a formed part or molding. In the conventional steam chest molding process the source of energy used is steam, which heats and welds the foam particles in the mold into a formed part (Fig. 15).
