Excimer properties in polymers have special interest in various contexts. Polystyrene prepared by an anionic end-to-end coupling reaction has been found to give anomalous emission between 300-320 nm, attributable to styrenic chain-end impurities. Other workers also associate polystyrene emission with chemical defects in the main chain and optical impurity centres. Excimer lasers use gases, but because of their special properties are usually considered as a class of their own. Excimer is short for excited dimer, which consists of two elements, such as argon and fluorine, that can be chemically combined in an excited state only. These lasers typically emit radiation with veiy small wavelengths, in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum. A first generation poly(amido amine) dendrimer has been functionalized with three calyx[4]arenes, each carrying a pyrene fluorophore (4) [30]. In acetonitrile solution the emission spectrum shows both the monomer and the excimer emission band, typical of the pyrene chromophore. Figure 3 shows the intensity ratio le/Im of inframolecular excimer pyrene for PMAA/PEO (9200) and PAA/PEO (9200). It is seen that when added, PMAA more markedly reduces intramolecular excimer formation in PEO than does PAA.
