Biotechnology for medical applications had become widely accepted and recombinant methods were familiar to most scientists working in the field. The first German biotech companies, the pioneers of the biotech industry in Germany, Qiagen (established 1984), Rhein Biotech (established 1986), MWG-Biotech (established 1990)and Evotec (established 1993), were struggling along. 

Over the past several years, descriptions of fragment collections have been published in journals as well as book chapters. In two recent reviews, a chapter from Evotec (33) compared several collections based their origins, while a journal article from Leiden University (26) summarized fragment collections based on the intended screening methods. We would like to present an overview by blending information from both reviews together to provide a more complete and updated picture (see Table 11.2 for details).

At Evotec, all compounds delivered are quality control (QC) checked by LC-MS. This is a major effort, but it is of the utmost importance to collect the initial purity data and to eliminate those fragments with unconfirmed structures (typically this is 5 % of the compounds...

Thus it is not quite correct to say that Eigen went from very fast reactions to very slow ones as some of the processes in the evolution are rather fast. He and his associates have founded a company in Hamburg. Its name is Evotec from Evolutionary Technology, and at the time of our conversation it employed 80 people. The company optimizes proteins, produces new substances, screens others, creates fast techniques of single molecule detection, and develops anti-virus strategies and diagnostic tools.
