Eudesmene is a sesquiterpene obtained by the dehydration of eudesmol, the sesquiterpene alcohol found by Baker and Smith in several species of eucalyptus oil. It has the following characters —... 

It forms an acetate, which boils at 165° to 170° at 11 mm. By re- duction with hydrogen and spongy platinum, it yields dihydroeudesmol, an alcohol melting at 82°. On dehydration it yields a sesquiterpene, eudesmene. Eudesmol appears to have a tendency to liquefy by keeping. Whether the liquid body is an isomer or not is unsettled. 

Semmler and Tobias consider that eudesmol and globulol are related in the same manner asiborneol and isoborneol. 

Stylotelline (23) is a constituent of a Stylotella sp. collected offshore in New Caledonia. 13C NMR spectra involving 2D NMR techniques provided the bulk of information leading to its structure. The absolute configuration was demonstrated after the tertiary isocyano group was removed to yield the known conjugated diene, ( + )-d-selinene (24). Optical rotation and spectral data of the transformation product were identical in all respects to those of the corresponding product obtained from eudesmols [42], Although neither the isothiocyanato nor the formamido compounds were isolated, the latter was prepared, which allowed an nOe observation between the axial C-3 and the amide protons. 

Myrrh contains many sesquiterpenes such as delta-elemene, j8-eudesmol, o-copaene, and several furosesquiterpenes (Gruenwald 1998). Also contained are the triterpenes 3-epi-o-amyrin and a-amyrenone.

The oil is sometimes incorrectly called West Indian sandalwood oil. However, its composition and odor are different from those of the oils obtained from sandalwood species. The major components of amyris oil are sesquiterpenoids such as elemol [639-99-6], /3-eudesmol [473-15-4], and epi-7-eudesmol [15051-81-7] [241-244]. 

The composition of the Bourbon oil differs quantitatively as well as qualitatively from that of North African oil. However, they both contain an unusually high percentage of (-)-citronellol, isomenthone, formates, and tiglates, which are rarely found in essential oils. The two types of oil can be differentiated by two characteristic minor constituents the Bourbon type contains (-)-6,9-guaiadiene [36577-33-0] and the African type contains 10-e i-7-eudesmol [15051-81-7] see p. 167 [521-531b].
