The aniline-based squaraines 4 with hydroxyalkyl, carboxypropyl, and ethylene glycol groups exhibit absorption maxima between 640-649 nm (eM = 100,000-300,000 M 1cm x) and emission maxima between 663 and 675 nm in aqueous solutions... [Pg.79]

With the increase in H/C ratio one would expect a decrease in /. These values were obtained for the chloroform-soluble fractions of the products by NMR and are listed in Table IV. From the C NMR spectra (Figure 4) the for product 1 was determined to be 0.50. This same coal has been shown by florination to have an of approximately 0.69 (17). The attachment of ethylene glycol groups (ROCH2CH2-O-Coal) was determined to be 5.1% of carbons from the integration of the peaks in the 55-65-ppm region. We found these peaks to be absent in other coal products such as SRC. However, these data do not exclude the reaction of ethylene (CH2=CH2) with the coal as mentioned by Ouchi... [Pg.169]

Figure 4 Chemical procedure for the preparation of aminooxyacetyl-functionahzed glass slides and the immobilization of underivatized oligosaccharides. The aminooxyacetyl groups react selectively with the carbonyl group at the reducing end of carbohydrates via an irreversible condensation while the penta(ethylene glycol) groups serve as spacer arms and prevent the nonspecific adsorption of protein to the monolayer. Non-specific interactions between monolayer surfaces and solute molecules were studied by Whitesides and coworkers. They found that sodium dodecyl sulphate and other detergents reversibly adsorb from aqueous solutions on the surface of hexadecanethi-olate monolayer on the gold surface. Adsorption is well described by the Langmuir isotherm. Formation of full monolayers was observed at concentrations close to the critical micelle concentration for the surfactant. Monolayers presenting ethylene glycol groups at the interface, HS(CH2)ii(0CH2CH2)60H, resist adsorption of surfactants at these concentrations . [Pg.611]

As the presence of ethylene glycol groups influences the copper-mediated LRP of MMA, further studies were undertaken to investigate this. In order to determine if alkyl ether groups affect the rate of polymerization, polymerizations in presence of ethylene glycol diethyl ether were carried out and monitored by in-situ NMR. [Pg.139]
