Other uses of ethylene dichloride include its formulation with tetraethyl and tetramethyl lead solutions as a lead scavenger, as a degreasing agent, and as an intermediate in the synthesis of many ethylene derivatives. [Pg.201]

Ethylene and styrene derivatives react with various propargylic silyl ethers in the presence of zirconocene(II) to afford allenic products in high yield (Scheme 5.7). For example, substrate 67 was transformed into the trisubstituted allene hydrocarbon 68 in 93% yield under the reaction conditions [20]. In the synthesis of various tetraalkylated allenes, in which several of the alkyl substituents also contained triple bonds, allowing these substrates to be cydized intramolecularly into aromatic com-... [Pg.192]

Synthesis (Kleemann et al. 1999, Janssen (Janssen), 1973 Janssen et al. (Janssen), 1973, Stokbroekx et al., 1973, Niemegeers et al., 1974) ) Treatment of 2-oxo-3,3-diphenyl-tetrahydrofuran, synthesized by treatment of diphenyl-acetic acid ethyl ester with ethylene oxide, with HBr(gas) yields bromo derivative i, which is then converted into butyryl chloride derivative ii by means of thionyl chloride in refluxing chloroform. Reaction of derivative ii with dimethylamine in toluene affords dimethyl (tetrahydro-3,3-diphenyl-2-furylidene)ammonium bromide, which is then condensed with 4-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-piperidinol by means of Na2C03 and Kl in refluxing 4-methyl-2-pentanone to provide loperamide. [Pg.200]

Fundamental work on organoaluminum chemistry by Prof. Karl Ziegler and co-workers at the Max Planck Institute provided the basis for a commercial synthesis of even-carbon-numbered straight chain primary alcohols. These alcohols are identical with products derived from naturally occurring fats. In this process, ethylene is reacted with aluminum triethyl to form a higher aikylaluminum which then is oxidized and hydrolyzed to give the corresponding alcohols. [Pg.47]

Alkylation of aluminum with ethylene yields products that find application as initiators and starter compounds in the production of a-olefins and linear primary alcohols, as polymerization catalysts, and in the synthesis of some monomers like 1,4-hexadiene. Triethyl aluminum [97-93-8], A1(C2H5)3, is the most important of the ethylene-derived aluminum alkyls. [Pg.433]

Dichloroacetylene is rather endothermic (ALtf (g) +149.4 kJ/mol, 1.57 kJ/g) and a heat-sensitive explosive gas which ignites in contact with air. However, its azeotrope with diethyl ether (55.4% dichloroacetylene) is not explosive and is stable to air [ 1 ] [2]. It is formed on catalysed contact between acetylene and chlorine, or sodium hypochlorite at low temperature or by the action of alkali upon polychloro-ethane and -ethylene derivatives, notably trichloroethylene [3]. A safe synthesis has been described [4], Ignition of a 58 mol% solution in ether on exposure to air of high humidity, and violent explosion of a cone, solution in carbon tetrachloride shortly after exposure to air have been reported. Stirring the ethereal solution with tap water... [Pg.261]

Generally, 1,2-disubstituted ethylene derivatives have only a small tendency for radical homopolymerization. An exception is vinylene carbonate (VCA) which can be easily polymerized by chemical as well as radiation initiation. However, the reaction is strongly affected by traces of impurities formed during the synthesis. Inhibition experiments are discussed with regard to the nature of the inhibiting impurities. The copolymerization behavior of VCA with some halo-substituted olefins was studied with chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), a statistical copolymer with a slight tendency for alternation was obtained. [Pg.107]
