When non-bonded compression does eventually appear, its effects on both AH and AS are unmistakeable. A sharp increase in AH, as is observed, for example, for the hydrolysis of ethyl trimethylacetate, is accompanied by a decrease in AS, as expected if steric hindrance of solvation is occurring. [Pg.141]

Certain a-halo ketones undergo rearrangement with sodium alkoxides in anhydrous ether to form esters. Methyl txrbromoisopropyl ketone and sodium ethoxide give ethyl trimethylacetate (6l%). Ring contraction occurs with a-chlorocyclohexanone to give cyclopentanecarboxylic ester (53%). ... [Pg.700]

To a flask equipped with condenser were added 500 mL ether, 29.2 mL absolute ethanol (0.5 mol), and 11.5 g sodium (0.5 mol). This mixture was refluxed for 48 h to ensure the completion of reaction and then cooled in ice. After that, 82.5 g 3-bromo-3-methyl-2-butanone (0.5 mol) was added over a period of 2 h. The solution was refluxed 3 h, then water was added to dissolve the precipitated sodium bromide. The organic layer was separated and fractionated via distillation, and 39.8 g ethyl trimethylacetate was obtained, in a yield of 61.3%, b.p.l 16°C at 725 mmHg, ng 1.3912, df 0.856g/cm ... [Pg.112]

Low-molecular-weight esters react quite readily with hydrazine, but heavier ones must be coerced. Aromatic esters are less reactive than aliphatic esters toward hydrazine, and they and the more reristant aliphatic esters occasionally require prolonged heating with hydrazine at elevated temperatures in a se ed tube. Branching of the carbon chain alpha to the ester group retards hydrazide formation in contrast with ethyl acetate, which reacts spontaneously with hydrazine at room temperature, ethyl pivaJate (ethyl trimethylacetate) requires a temperar ture of 140 , And adamantane-l,3-dicarboxylic ester (I) failed to form a hydrazide under all conditions (imspecified) that were tried. [Pg.341]
