Ethyl succinonitrile

In its manufacture, methyl ethyl ketone is condensed with ethylcyanoacetate to give ethyl-2-cyano-3-methyl-2-pentenoate. That, in turn, adds HCN to give ethyl-2,3-dicyano-3-methyl-pentanoate. Saponification and decarboxylation gives 2-methyl-2-ethyl succinonitrile. Heating with aqueous NH3 gives the diamide which loses NHj and cyclizes to ethosuximide. [Pg.594]

A practical synthesis of pyrrolo[2,3- ]pyridine from succinonitrile and ethyl formate has been reported <20030PD209>. The multistep synthesis proceeds via a substituted cyanopyrtole intermediate to give 3-cyanopyrrolo[2,3- ]pyridine, 67. As shown in Equation (12), 67 can be quantitatively converted into the unsubstituted compound, 1, by heating at reflux in concentrated acid. [Pg.287]

Ethylbenzal cyanoacetate is prepared by reaeting together benzaldehyde and ethyl eyanoaeetate in the presence of piperidine, whieh on treatment with sodium eyanide yields the eorresponding succinonitrile derivative. This on hydrolysis in an aeidie medium (HCl) gives rise to a-phenyl sueeinie acid which is dissolved in an exeess of 40% methylamine to give phensuximide. [Pg.211]
