Levy and Massey studied the effect of composition of mixtures on the mechanical properties of the cured polymers Their mixtures contained a urethane diacrylate, 2-ethoxy-ethoxy ethyl acrylate (EEEA) and/or N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP). The EEEA was found to react not only with radicals but also with the photoinitiator (DMPA). It also formed a significant amount of homopolymer, thereby reducing the modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break. These effects were ascribed to the low rate of polymerization of EEEA as compared with the diacrylate. [Pg.50]

An important step forward in the development of oil-resistant acrylic rubbers for use at low temperatures was the recognition that if a —CH — group in the ester side chain was replaced by an —O— or —S— linkage both the Tg and the degree of swelling in solvents were reduced (Lawler et al, 1968). This has led to the commercial development of rubbers which are copolymers of either ethyl or butyl acrylate with an alkoxyalkyl acrylate comprising some 20-50% of the total composition. Typical of such alkoxy compounds are methoxy ethyl acrylate (VI) and ethoxy ethyl acrylate (VII) ... [Pg.371]

The requirements for the olefins are not severe as electron-poor double bonds will not react maleic anhydride is completely inert to the reactive SF5Br at 100°C. Electron-rich double bonds (1,3-butadiene, vinyl acetate, B,B-bis-ethoxy ethyl acrylate) are so reactive that it is difficult to obtain any SF5X adducts (instead XF addition products are formed) (27,29). [Pg.137]

An oxazole-alkene Diels-Alder reaction has also been used to synthesize a tri-fluoromethylated pyridine related to pyridoxol. 5-Ethoxy-4-(trifluoromethyl)-2-oxazolecarboxylic acid 41 decarboxylated and then reacted with acrylic acid to give the expected 3-hydroxy-2-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine-4-carboxylic acid 42 in 63% yield (Fig. 3.13)." The electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group of 41 strongly modulates its reactivity, however, and it does not react with ethyl acrylate or A-phenyl maleimide. [Pg.424]
