Ethanol—continued

One route is described in U.S. Patent 2,986,573 Mix 63 grams of benzyl chloride, 38 grams of thiourea, 3 drops of concentrated ammonium hydroxide solution, and 250 ml of 95% ethanol. Reflux the mixture for 3 hours. Cool and add a solution containing 96 grams of 2,4-dichloro-nitrobenzene in 200 ml of ethanol. Heat the mixture to reflux and then add drop-wise a solution of 70 grams of potassium hydroxide in 500 ml of ethanol. Continue refluxing for 2 hours, and then cool and filter the solids produced. Wash the solid with aqueous ethanol and dry. There is thus produced 2-benzylthio-4-chloro-nitrobenzene. Sus-... [Pg.467]

A process referred to as vapor-arbitrated pervaporation addresses these issues by manipulating the transmembrane activity gradients of water and ethanol in a pervaporation system. Using a permeate side sweep stream that contains water vapor at a partial pressure corresponding to the activity of water on the feed side, permeation of water is halted while ethanol continues to diffuse through the membrane into the sweep stream and is removed. In this way, the native permselectivity of the membrane system can be altered in a controlled fashion to extract one or more volatile components from a solution. [Pg.378]

Third, the most acceptable current protocol for administering ethanol to laboratory animals is to feed a liquid diet containing 35-50% of the total calories as ethanol. With this method, the animals receive ethanol continuously, and food is almost always present in the stomach. Human alcoholics often go on binges and usually drink during a limited number of hours and, perhaps, on an empty stomach. In our study (Misslbeck et al, 1984), rats had access to the liquid diet between 3 00 p.m. and 8 00 a.m. The animals rapidly consumed about one-third of their total daily intake shortly after they were offered the diet at 3 00 p.m. Although they received a large dose of alcohol, it was still consumed in the presence of... [Pg.145]

Mannan A Remove the wax material from the seed of the ivory nut and extract this using 7 wt % KOH solution. Neutralize this using acetic acid and precipitate the raw mannan A using ethanol. Continue refining using KOH, Fehling s solution, diluted hydrochloric acid and ethanol. [Pg.1519]
