Estrogen administration

The adult male prostate contains abundant acid phosphatase which it secretes into the semen. The production of this enzyme is governed by the circulating levels of androgenic hormones. Castration or estrogen administration markedly reduces the prostatic urinary acid phosphatase of males. Other organs such as the liver, kidney, spleen, red cells and platelets also contain significant amounts of acid phosphatase.

Estrogen administration in postmenopausal women has been observed to produce cardioprotective benefits. The exact biomolecular mechanisms for this cardioprotection are unclear but it is likely that actions mediated both through the estrogen receptors, such as the beneficial alteration in lipid profiles and upregulation of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor, and independently of the estrogen receptors, such as antioxidant action, contribute to the observed cardioprotective effects of estrogens. 

B. Indications and use Lupron Injection, Lupron Depot, Lupron Depot-3 Month, and Lupron Depot-4 Month are indicated in the palliative treatment of advanced prostate cancer. These products offer an alternative treatment when orchiectomy or estrogen administration is either not indicated or unacceptable to the patient. Lupron Injection Pediatric and Lupron Depot-PED are indicated in the treatment of children with central precocious puberty. Lupron Depot and Lupron Depot-3 Month are indicated for the management of endometriosis, including pain relief and reduction of endometriotic lesions. 

Small doses of progestins administered orally or by implantation under the skin can be used for contraception. They are particularly suited for use in patients for whom estrogen administration is undesirable. They are about as effective as intrauterine devices or combination pills containing 20-30 meg of ethinyl estradiol. There is a high incidence of abnormal bleeding.

Estrogens cause abnormalities of tryptophan metabolism that resemble those seen in vitamin Be deficiency, and the vitamin is widely used to treat the side effects of estrogen administration and estrogen-associated symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome, although there is litde evidence of its efficacy. High doses of the vitamin, of the order of 100 times requirements, cause peripheral sensory neuropathy.
