Harcourt and Esson were the first to study such reactions (in their case, the reaction of potassium permanganate with oxalic acid). Esson was the first to integrate the differential equation. This scheme can be treated exactly by considering the differential equations ... [Pg.634]

Although slowly progressing chemical changes attracted the attention of the earliest and most superficial observers, no definite ideas about the intimate nature of chemical action could be formed until quantitative investigations on the rate of progress of reactions were made. Such investigations were first made by Harcourt and Esson and by Wilhelmy. Their work, and that of van t Hoff on chemical dynamics, laid the foundations of the whole subject. [Pg.2]

New polymer-supported reagents for sulfide transfer have been developed to avoid exposure to malodorous and toxic sulfur reagents. Ley et al.15 prepared a stable aminothiophosphate polystyrene resin for the conversion of secondary and tertiary amides to thioamides in high conversion and purity (Table III, entry 11). This procedure is extremely clean and affords the desired product with short reaction times in comparison to Law-esson s reagent. In addition, the aminothiophosphate resin dehydrates primary amides to nitriles. [Pg.353]

Almost concurrently the same formulation was suggested by Harkurt (a mathematician) and Esson (a chemist). [Pg.59]

J. H. van t Hoff s classic text on chemical dynamics has been republished116 and his work on chemical dynamics,117 as well as that of Ostwald118 and Arrhenius,119 has been briefly discussed. There is a comprehensive narrative of the development of chemical kinetics from about the middle of the 19th century, which reconstructs Guldberg and Waage s work on chemical kinetics and compares their efforts to simultaneous work at Oxford by A. G. V. Harcourt (1834-1919) and W. Esson (1839-1916).120... [Pg.140]

In 1787 Eleuthere Irenee du Pont worked at Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier s saltpeter plant in Essone, France. Here he was exposed to the craft of gunpowder manufacturing and to the application of Lavoisier s new chemistry to an industrial process. When du Pont arrived in the United States in 1800, he began to search for a potentially profitable business op-... [Pg.24]

In the final years of their long collaboration, Harcourt and Esson investigated the way in which reaction rates depended upon temperature. When Van t Hoff wrote Studies in Chemical Dynamics (1884), embracing chemical kinetics and thermodynamics, he was able to build on the work of Harcourt and Esson. He showed more fully how temperature influences reaction rates, and Arrhenius in turn took his work further. The history of chemical kinetics in its early years is one of cooperative and complementary work, with little of the feuding that characterizes the development of many areas of science. [Pg.164]

Some of the particular kinetic problems of hydrogen atom abstractions from O—H bonds have been discussed in the context of questions of general interest. The aim has been to make unsolved problems explicit rather than to give final solutions. It seems desirable to realize explicitly that many of our theories and treatments are entirely empirical (Guggenheim, 1938) strongly resembling the entirely empirical origin of the rate constant (Harcourt and Esson, 1866, 1867).4... [Pg.173]
