Ergot alkaloids drug interactions

The following drug classes may have a potential drug interaction with nevirapine Antiarrhythmics, anticonvulsants, antifungals, calcium channel blockers, cancer chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide), ergot alkaloids, immunosuppressants, motility agents, opiate agonists.

Tetracycline Tetracycline injections have an acid pH. Incompatibility may reasonably be expected with alkaline preparations or with drugs unstable at low pH. Care should be taken when administering tetracyclines, since chelation takes place with metal ions. Tetracyclines interact with inorganic metal ions. They should not be used with drugs that cause hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity (e.g., digoxin, theophylline, ergot alkaloids, methotrexate, oral contraceptives, and penicillins). 

Ergot alkaloids interact with beta-blockers, antimigraine drugs, antibacterials, and glycerol nitrate. Concomitant administration with erythromycin causes ergotism.147,148... 

Interactions. Erythromycin and the other macro-lides are enzyme inhibitors and interfere with the metabolic inactivation of some drugs, e.g. warfarin, carbamazepine, theophylline, disopyramide, increasing their effects. Reduced inactivation of terfena-dine may lead to serious cardiac arrhythmias, and of ergot alkaloids may cause ergotism. 

Drug interactions The concurrent use of sildenafil (used for erectile dysfunrtion) is contraindicated due to potentiation of hypotensive effects Of nitrates. Ergot alkaloids (used for migraine headaches) may cause increased blood pressure and decreased antianginai effects of nitrates—avoid concurrert use.

Autacoids are endogenous molecules with powerful pharmacologic effects but poorly defined physiologic roles. Histamine and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine 5-HT) are two of the most important autacoids. Both are synthesized in the body from amino acid precursors and then eliminated by amine oxidation the pathways of synthesis and metabolism are very similar to those used for catecholamine synthesis and metabolism. The ergot alkaloids are a heterogeneous group of drugs that interact with serotonin receptors, dopamine receptors, and alpha receptors. They are included in this chapter because of their effects on serotonin receptors and on smooth muscle.
