Erbium nitrate

Erbium nitrate [Er(NOj) ] may explode when shocked or at high temperatures. As with other rare-earths, erbium and its compounds should be handled with care because they can be toxic. [Pg.299]

The Swiss chemist Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac (1817-1894), was the first in applying these spectroscopic methods. He was 23 years old when he embarked upon his quest for new rare-earth elements. He demonstrated in 1878 that "erbia was a complex mixture of at least two rare-earth elements, erbium and "ytterbium (Yb), by heating "erbium nitrate and extracting the decomposed salt with water. The little Swedish village Ytterby thus holds a distinguished place in the history of the rare-earth elements. [Pg.7]

Titania xerogel doped with erbium was synthesized from the aqueous-alcoholic sol of Ti(OC2H5)4 precursor and erbium nitrate in a ratio corresponding to the solid film containing 30 wt. % of Er2O3 and 70 wt. % of TiO2 [14]. Then the sol was deposited onto one of these artificial opals (sample n3) and on the PAA films of 5 pm thickness with diameter of pores 100 nm. [Pg.205]

All the Schiff s base complexes discussed so far are low-molecular weight complexes. An erbium(lll)-containing methacrylate metallopolymer was prepared by free-radical polymerization of a Schiff s base monomer LllH, followed by complex formation with hydrated erbium nitrate (Haase et al., 1996). By XRD, the presence of a smectic mesophase was shown. A special feature of the polymer is that the complexing group is an Ai-aryl substituted Schiff s base, rather than an Ai-alkyl substituted one. No further structural data were reported. A detailed study of the mesophase behavior of lanthanide complexes of Ai-aryl substituted Schiff s base ligands LllH was reported by Rao et al. (2002, 2010). The complexes were synthesized by reaction between the... [Pg.59]

Speculation and discussion of the co-ordination numbers of lanthanide cations in various media continue. The effects of a series of Ln + cations on rates of oxygen exchange between edta and water have been interpreted in terms of a change from a co-ordination number of nine to one of eight in the complexes [Ln(edta)(OHa) ] about two-thirds of the way along the lanthanide series. Ultrasonic absorption studies on solutions of erbium nitrate and erbium chloride in water-methanol mixtures suggest that a difference in coordination number of the erbium cation in nitrate and in chloride media has an effect on kinetic behaviour. ... [Pg.316]
