Epidermoid cysts are more common in lateral than midline sites, but they have been found in many different locations (see Table 20.13). Common locations are the cerebellopontine angle, around the pons, near the sella, within the temporal lobe, in the diploe, and in the spinal canal. Carcinoma rarely arises within an epidermoid cyst. ... [Pg.876]

Clinically, epidermoid cysts appear as firm, oval or lobulated nodules of variable size located either on the dorsum of the penis or, less frequently, on the ventral aspect of the penile shaft (Rattan et al. 1997). They are more often encountered in childhood, but can occur also in middle age and in the elderly. [Pg.175]

These lesions are usually slowly growing and asymptomatic, but occasionally can grow rapidly and get inflamed. Large epidermoid cysts may interfere with intercourse and cause problems with walking or wearing underwear. They can also interfere with urination. [Pg.176]

Therapy consists of surgical removal of the mass. Imaging is often required in patients with large, rapidly growing epidermoid cysts to confirm the cystic nature of the lesion and assess the relationship with adjacent organs. [Pg.176]

These lesions are extremely rare in the penis with only few cases reported in the literature (Aidarov and Zolotarev 1962 Tomasini et al. 1997). In contrast to epidermoid cysts, dermoid cysts are lined by an epidermis that possesses various fully mature epi-... [Pg.177]
