Environmental protection legislation

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), passed by Congress on December 24, 1969, and signed into law by President Nixon on January 1,1970, mandated the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Council on Environmental Quality. Congressional environmental protection legislation subsequent to NEPA included the Clean Air Act (1970), the Resource Recovery Act (1970), the Water Pollution Control Act (1972), the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act Amendments (1972), and others. 

Stricter environmental protection legislation has led to the equipping of power stations with desulfurization units especially in Japan and Western Europe, including the Federal Republic of Germany, and also in the USA.

With new technical processes, the determination of the process mass intensity (PMl = total mass in a process (kg)/mass of product (kg)) and considerations of possible adverse effects on the environment usually form part of the process evaluation (Green Chemistry). On grounds of modem environmental protection legislation, in many cases environmentally friendly procedures are reckoned better than older processes, which have a greater polluting effect on the environment (Fig. 1.8). Pollution incidents are bad for an organisation s public image. 

Environmental protection legislation was raised to prevent the use of enviromnentally unacceptable materials such as chromium salts, which are now restricted because chromium (Cr ) is highly toxic and carcinogenic.
