Environmental cigarette smoke

Mutagenic activity. Smoke of cured leaf, in broth culture was active on Salmonella typliimurium . Environmental cigarette smoke, administered by whole-body to p53 mutant (UL53-3 x A/J)Fj mice of both genders for up to 9.5 months, produced similar oxidative DNA damage in lung and heart of both mutants and wild-type littermate con-... [Pg.321]

Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) mixture of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar and smoke exhaled by the smoker (also secondhand smoke or passive smoking). [Pg.529]

Environmental—recent exposures (such as close contact with meningitis or respiratory tract infection, contaminated foods), active or passive exposure to cigarette smoke, close living conditions... [Pg.1034]

The relationship of PbB level to systolic and diastolic blood pressure was determined in a study of 89 Boston policemen (race not specified) (Weiss et al. 1986, 1988). These policemen were under observation for health outcomes related to environmental work exposures (i.e., they had traffic exposure histories). After statistically adjusting for previous systolic blood pressure, body mass index, age, and cigarette smoking, high PbB level ( 30 pg/dL) was a significant (p=0.01) predictor of subsequent elevation in systolic blood pressure of 1.5-11 mm Hg in the working policemen with normal blood pressure. Low PbB level (20-29 pg/dL) was not a predictor of subsequent systolic blood pressure elevations. Diastolic pressure was unrelated to PbB levels. [Pg.51]

Chronic bronchitis is a result of several contributing factors, including cigarette smoking exposure to occupational dusts, fumes, and environmental pollution and bacterial (and possibly viral) infection. [Pg.480]

A complete occupational/environmental history for the determination of exposure to noxious, irritating gases, as well as cigarette smoking, must be assessed. Exposure to bronchial irritants should be reduced. [Pg.481]

Nitro-substituted PAH have received increased attention as an important class of environmental pollutants. They have been detected in an ample variety of sources, including automobile exhaust fumes, wood and cigarette smoke, kerosene heater flue, emissions of coal-driven power stations and grilled meat. These subjects have been reviewed472,473. [Pg.1129]
