Environment Functionalised

Considering that severe health hazards and diseases that can be induced by the adhesion and proliferation of bacteria on the surface of numerous materials, bioactive materials incorporated in the surfaces will be required. The cellulose-functionalised with porphyrin 69-71 and 80 were shown to kill gram positive and gram negative bacteria upon irradiation with visible light. Such materials could be used in industrial, household and medical environments, and more generaly in areas that would benefit from permanent and efficient surface disinfection.62 64... [Pg.225]

The commercial production carried out by various companies is estimated to be ca. 2000 tyear-1 worldwide [7]. Due to the common solubility in water and various other solvents (e.g. DMSO, formamide), the biocompatibility, and the ability of degrading in certain physical environments, dextran is already successfully applied in the medical and biomedical field [8]. The physiological activity of dextran and its derivatives, indicated also by a very large number of publications in this area of research, is in contrast to inadequate structural analysis of both dextran and their semi-synthetic products. Only a few publications, in contrast to extensive studies in cellulose and starch chemistry [9,10], deal with the defined functionalisation and characterisation of dextran for adjusting desired features. [Pg.204]

Direct measurement of the interaction between the network and the guest molecule, when it is possible to quantify the variations of a property depending on these interactions. For instance, the introduction of fluorescent probes, either via the functionalised monomer or via the guest would allow accurate assessment of any change in the immediate environment of the probes [ 136]. The use of MIPs as recognition elements in sensors led to the development of this approach (see below). [Pg.16]

Functionalised mesoporous silicas prepared by either grafting by silylation of MCM-41 or by self-assembly co-condensation of organically functionalised silica precursors and silica precursor (RO)4Si in presence of non-ionic surfactants feature different properties. Materials were characterised by N2 sorption isotherms, FTIR and MAS-NMR. Imine formation during contacting the different samples with probes such as acetone and benzaldehyde demonstrated different environments of the anchored amine groups. [Pg.319]
