In this industry, intellectual capital is the primary input to the product, with the material content in the final product being trivial. We bring home, download, or watch a movie for its entertainment value, not for the case, liner notes, and disc that comprise its package. Accordingly, the physical form of the product is a minor portion of the price we pay. More than 90 percent of our dollar goes to creativity components from artists, writers, directors, and producers.

The CD-I (compact disk-interactive) is a low cost alternative to the CD-ROM for the entertainment industry. CD-I is a subset of the CD-ROM standard data format. It allows the digital storage of data, audio, and video information in a form that permits rapid interaction with a computer. CD-I is compatible to CD-ROM and to CD-AD 0 = 120 mm. Krypton lasers are also ionized gas lasers and are very similar in general characteristics to argon lasers (27). Krypton lasers having total multiline output up to 16 W are available commercially. The strongest line at 0.6471 p.m is notable because it is in the red portion of the spectmm, and thus makes the krypton laser useful for appHcations such as display and entertainment.

We have tried to present the material in an uncomplicated way, and to make the examples entertaining, while establishing basic physical concepts and their application to materials processing. We found that the best way to do this was to identify a small set of "generic" materials of each class (of metals, of ceramics, etc.) which broadly typified the class, and to base the development on these they provide the pegs on which the discussion and examples are hung.
