The choice of a renewable energy source to power a hydrogen fuel cell system will depend on the geography, climate and other resources of the location. I have chosen photovoltaics as the example power source for hydrogen production because it is available to more people than either geothermal, wind, or tidal. For a person without much technical skill, solar power is easier to implement than wind power. It is also less costly up front and not as dependent on location as the other RE power sources... [Pg.3]

The demand of electricity is distributed for generation technologies by the same optimization model as heat demand. Preference is given to technologies using renewable energy sources (hydro power plants, wind power plants, etc.). [Pg.183]

The use of wind as a renewable energy source involves the conversion of power contained in moving air masses to rotating shaft power. These air masses represent the complex circulation of winds near the surface of Earth caused by Earth s rotation and by convective heating from the sun. The actual conversion process utilizes basic aerodynamic forces, ie, lift or drag, to produce a net positive torque on a rotating shaft, resulting in the production of mechanical power, which can then be used directly or converted to electrical power. [Pg.232]

A major problem with the new sustainable energy sources is their reliability. Inherently they will produce electricity as the wind blows and the sun shines. The need for power is not constant either, with peak demands during the day. Hence, ways are needed to store energy that enable release on demand. Synthetic fuels and methanol are candidates, but the most important will be hydrogen. It can be produced conveniently from water and electricity with a reasonably high efficiency of 70 %. Hydrogen is the ideal fuel for fuel cells. [Pg.341]
