Distribution of Carbon. Estimation of the amount of biomass carbon on the earth s surface is a problem in global statistical analysis. Although reasonable projections have been made using the best available data, maps, surveys, and a host of assumptions, the vaHdity of the results is impossible to support with hard data because of the nature of the problem. Nevertheless, such analyses must be performed to assess the feasibiHty of biomass energy systems and the gross types of biomass available for energy appHcations.

Both the wavelength dispersive and energy dispersive spectrometers are well suited for quaUtative analysis of materials. Each element gives on the average only six emission lines. Because the characteristic x-ray spectra are so simple, the process of allocating atomic numbers to the emission lines is relatively simple and the chance of making a gross error is small. 

Thermal energy, power generation, and incineration have several factors in common. All rely on combustion, which causes the release of air pollutants all exhaust their emissions at elevated temperatures and all produce large quantities of ash when they consume solid or residual fuels. The ratio of the energy used to control pollution to the gross energy produced can be a deciding factor in the selection of the control system. These processes have important differences which influence the selection of specific systems and devices for individual facilities.

As an example of a multilayer system we reproduce, in Fig. 3, experimental TPD spectra of Cs/Ru(0001) [34,35] and theoretical spectra [36] calculated from Eq. (4) with 6, T) calculated by the transfer matrix method with M = 6 on a hexagonal lattice. In the lattice gas Hamiltonian we have short-ranged repulsions in the first layer to reproduce the (V X a/3) and p 2 x 2) structures in addition to a long-ranged mean field repulsion. Second and third layers have attractive interactions to account for condensation in layer-by-layer growth. The calculations not only successfully account for the gross features of the TPD spectra but also explain a subtle feature of delayed desorption between third and second layers. As well, the lattice gas parameters obtained by this fit reproduce the bulk sublimation energy of cesium in the third layer.
