Examples are electric heaters, nuclear reactors, exothermic chemical reactions, etc. In this section we shall consider variable as well as uniform energy generation in flat plates, cylinders, and spheres. The gas turbine power plant which has revolutioni2ed aviation derives basically from the steam turbine adapted to a different working fluid. The difference is cmcial with respect to fuel because steam can be generated by any heat source, whereas the gas turbine requires a fuel that efficiently produces a very hot gas stream and is also compatible with the turbine itself. The hot gas stream results from converting chemical energy in fuel directly and continuously by combustion in compressed air. Fuel cells have several important benefits over conventional electrical eneigy generation from sources such as coal, as they are more efficient at converting fuel sources to end-use energy. The processes of life involve both energetic and entropic factors. When we walk, run, climb, fidget, dance, or toss and turn in bed, we are doing work against physical forces. When we ice fish on a frozen lake in Minnesota, we need to generate heat to keep our body temperature constant. That heat is lost to the enviromnent (an ineffective way to heat Minnesota in the winter but it happens nonetheless).
