The total daily energy expenditure is usually calculated as the sum of the RMR (in kcal/day) plus the energy required for the amount of time spent in each of the various types of physical activity (see Table 1.4). An approximate valne for the daily energy expenditure can be determined from the RMR and the appropriate percentage of the RMR required for physical activity (given above). For example, a very sedentary medical student would have a DEE equal to the RMR plus 30% of the RMR (or 1.3 X RMR) and an active person s daily expenditure could be 2 times the RMR.
