Poly(vinyl acetate) is too soft and shows excessive cold flow for use in moulded plastics. This is no doubt associated with the fact that the glass transition temperature of 28°C is little above the usual ambient temperatures and in fact in many places at various times the glass temperature may be the lower. It has a density of 1.19 g/cm and a refractive index of 1.47. Commercial polymers are atactic and, since they do not crystallise, transparent (if free from emulsifier). They are successfully used in emulsion paints, as adhesives for textiles, paper and wood, as a sizing material and as a permanent starch . A number of grades are supplied by manufacturers which differ in molecular weight and in the nature of comonomers (e.g. vinyl maleate) which are commonly used (see Section 14.4.4)... [Pg.389]

Thus, an estimation can be made of the hydrophilicity of the crown ring. The acetal-type crown ring obtained from hexaethyl-ene glycol and a higher aliphatic aldehyde is estimated to be e-quivalent to about four OE units in an alkyl POE monoether, from our study of the cloud point (11). Moroi et al. concluded, from a comparison of the cmc, that a diaza-18-crown-6 is equivalent to 20 OE units in the usual type of nonionic (12). Okahara s group evaluated the effective HLB based on the cloud point, phenol index and phase-inversion-temperature in emulsion of oil/water system and they concluded that 18-crown-6 and monoaza-18-crown-6 rings with dodecyl group are approximately equivalent to 4.0 and 4.5 units, respectively, of OE chains with the same alkyl chain (17). [Pg.33]

Performance vs Crosslinker Level. Table IV presents tensile and swell Index results on a series of approximately 0 C Tg VAE emulsion copolymers. ABDA containing copolymers had fair swell Index values which deteriorated rapidly as ABDA levels declined, but showed slow declines In wet tensile performance with reduced levels. Possible reasons for this are discussed below. [Pg.474]

When acetic acid is diffusing from a 1.9 iV solution in water into benzene, spontaneous emulsion forms on the aqueous side of the interface, accompanied by a little interfacial turbulence. Results can be obtained with this system, however, if in analysing the refractive index gradient near the surface a correction is made for the spontaneous emulsion the rate of transfer is then in excellent agreement (57) with Eq. (20) (Fig. 6). Consequently there is no appreciable energy barrier due to re-solvation of the acetic acid molecules at the interface, nor does the spontaneous emulsion affect the transfer. With a monolayer of sodium lauryl... [Pg.23]

Kizling and coworker [21] suggested that salts in the aqueous phase stabilised w/o HIPEs by two means. First, the Ostwald ripening process is inhibited due to the decreased solubility of the aqueous solution in the continuous oil phase. Secondly, the attractive forces between adjacent aqueous droplets are lowered, as a result of the increase in refractive index of the aqueous phase towards that of the oil phase. When the refractive indices of the two phases are matched, the attractive forces are at a minimum and highly stable, transparent emulsions are formed. The attractive force, A, is given by ... [Pg.187]

Solution random copolymers prepared by the above procedures have performed well in tire-tread formulations. 22 They require about 20 percent less accelerator (see Table II) as compared to an emulsion SBR and give higher compounded Mooney, lower heat buildup, increased resilience and better retread abrasion index. [Pg.401]

The last property is related to the processing of the rubber in the tire making equipment. By using organo-lithium compound in this case, it was possible to maintain a vinyl content not greater than 18, but to produce a polybutadiene styrene copolymer that has random block styrene and without the use of polar modifiers, which normally will increase the 1,2 content. This copolymer, when compounded in the tread recipe, as shown in the Table XVI, gave properties that are actually equivalent to that of emulsion SBR and in some cases even better. This is particularly true in the properties of the Young modulus index, which showed between -38 to -54 C the Stanley London Skid Resistant, in which the control is 100, shows that 110-115 was obtained. [Pg.422]

Accelerated stability tests using the emulsion volume index (EVI) Accelerated aging procedure in which an emulsion in a microhematocrit tube is subjected to centrifugal force EVI = (length of emulsion phase/lolul length of column) (% fal/0.9) x 100. A higher EVI indicates a more stable emulsion under the conditions of the test. [Pg.296]

For the reasons described above, the droplet size distribution of the same emulsion measured on different laser diffraction instruments can be significantly different, depending on the precise design of the optical system and the mathematical theory used to interpret the diffraction pattern. It should be noted, however, that the most common source of error in particle size analysis is incorrect operation of the instrument by the user. Common sources of user error are introduction of air bubbles into the sample, use of the wrong refractive index, insufficient dilution of emulsion to prevent multiple scattering. and use of an unclean optical system. [Pg.586]
