Flotation emulsion

Some modifications to the standard froth-flotation process have been developed in order to improve separation and recovery efficiency including carrier flotation, emulsion flotation, and floe flotation. These are all aimed at making very fine particles amenable to flotation, or at improving the efficiency of their flotation. 

Emulsion flotation is analogous to carrier flotation. Here, small-sized particles become attached to the surfaces of oil droplets (the carrier droplets). The carrier droplets attach to the air bubbles and the combined aggregates of small desired particles, carrier droplets, and air bubbles float to form the froth. An example is the emulsion flotation of submicrometre-sized diamond particles with isooctane. Emulsion flotation has also been applied to the flotation of minerals that are not readily wetted by water, such as graphite, sulfur, molybdenite, and coal [623]. Some oils used in emulsion flotation include mixed cresols (cresylic acid), pine oil, aliphatic alcohols, kerosene, fuel oil, and gas oil [623], A related use of a second, immiscible liquid to aid in particle separation is in agglomeration flocculation (see Section 5.6.4).

Any of a family of flotation processes in which oil is used to agglomerate or bridge particles and enhance flotation. In extender flotation, a small amount of oil is added to improve a collector s performance. In agglomerate flotation, oil is added to agglomerate very finely divided particles to a size that can be efficiently floated. In emulsion flotation, oil is added to function as the collector, for already hydrophobic particles. 

In achieving solid-solid separation in mineral beneficiation, selective coatings of water insoluble or sparingly soluble reagents are required in electronic ore sorting, froth flotation, and emulsion flotation operations. 

This aspect of emulsion flotation, however, has not been systematically studied. Dynamic properties of interfaces have attracted attention for many years because they help in understanding the behaviour of polymer, surfactant or mixed adsorption layers.6 In particular, interfacial rheology (dilational properties) is crucial for many technological processes (emulsions, flotation, foaming, etc).1 The present work deals with the adsorption of MeC at the air-water interface. Because of its amphiphilic character MeC is able to adsorb at the liquid interface thus lowering the surface tension. Our aim is to quantify how surface active this polymer is, and to determine the rheological properties of the layer. A qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the adsorption process and the dilata-tional surface properties have been realised by dynamic interface tension measurements using a drop tensiometer and an axisymmetric drop shape analysis. 

The flotation processes using oil-water interface for collection of particles are emulsion flotation at, 1 liquid-liquid flotation. In the former the rengentized particles are collected by oil-water emulsion droplets and by aemu on of the system, whereas in the latter removal of the particles collected at the interfoce is achieved mostly by phase separation, The only commercial use of emulsion flotation, to onr knowledge, is that of the separation of aputite from iron ore at LKAB, Malmberget, Sweden,...
