A closer glance at EMAS shows that the problems of SMEs have been taken into consideration in drafting the regulation. The importance of participation of small and medium-sized companies is stressed. Their involvement is to be promoted by establishing or promoting technical expertise and support. Extensive reporting such as that generated by multinational corporations is obviously not possible for smaller companies. 

Environmental auditing is only one feature of a much larger system of measures to improve environmental performance. Large manufacturing facilities will generally demand more detailed and formal EMSs than smaller facilities.
