Embden, Gustav

The glycolytic pathway was the first major metabolic sequence to be elucidated. Much of the definitive work was done in the 1930s by the German biochemists, Gustav Embden, Otto Meyerhof, and Otto Warburg. Because of their contributions the alternative name, Embden-Meyerhof pathway, is sometimes used for the glycolytic pathway. [Pg.250]

Gustav George Embden (1874-1933) was born in Hamburg, Germany, and was educated at Freiburg, Munich, Berlin, Strasbourg, and Zurich. In 1904, he became director of the chemistry laboratory of the medical clinic at the Frankfurt municipal hospital, and then became professor at the University of Frankfurt (1914-1933). He was the first to show the role of the liver in metabolism. [Pg.1203]
