Transmutation elements

Modern alchemy s claims that atoms were not indivisible and immutable and that humans could effect elemental transmutation entailed a rethinking of the nature of money during a moment of economic and monetary crisis. [Pg.171]

For example, when the element transmutes into gQTh by radiating la ray, gamma (y) rays are also produced. [Pg.64]

Today, one century after Ernest Rutherford and Frederick Soddy postulated that in the radioactive decay one chemical element transmutes into a new one, we know of 112 chemical elements. The discoveries of elements 114 and 116 are currently waiting to be confirmed and experimentalists are embarking to discover new and heavier elements. Now where are superheavy elements located on a physicist s chart of nuclides and on the Periodic Table of the Elements - the most basic chart in chemistry ... [Pg.327]

Radon was discovered in 1899 by the McGill University professors Ernest Rutherford and Robert Owens, who found that radioactive thorium produced radioactive gas. They named this gaseous substance thorium emanation, later to become thoron. It was found that radium gave off a similar emanation (radon), as did actinium (actinon), in 1900 and 1904, respectively. Once the structure of the atom and the elemental transmutation process became better understood, it was determined that thoron, radon, and actinon were different isotopes of the same element (radon)— °Rn, Rn, and Rn, respectively. [Pg.1085]

In accordance. .. substances ibid., p. 622. The balance of the application seems to concern a rough early conception of a thermonuclear fusion reactor of the Shiva type with a blanket for breeding heavy-element transmutations ... [Pg.805]

The formation of a beta particle is the result of the breakdown of a neutron into a proton and an electron (beta particle). Because the proton remains in the nucleus, the number of protons increases by one, while the number of neutrons decreases by one. Thus, in a nuclear equation for beta decay, the mass number of the radioactive nucleus and the mass number of the new nucleus are the same. However, the atomic number of the new nucleus increases by one, which makes it a nucleus of a different element transmutation). For example, the beta decay of a carbon-14 nucleus produces a nitrogen-14 nucleus. [Pg.566]

Several discoveries in physics of the early twentieth century had important consequences for the periodic table, although they have not changed it in any fundamental way. These discoveries include X-rays, radioactivity, the splitting of the atom, elemental transmutation, isotopy, atomic number as well as quantum mechanics and relativity. The discovery of atomic number by van den Broek and Moseley provided a more natural ordering principle that atomic weight which the pioneers had used. The new ordering principle resolved a number of pair rever-... [Pg.330]
