Electrolytic synthesis of ammonia from water and nitrogen

2 Electrolytic synthesis of ammonia from water and nitrogen [Pg.523]

Nitride ion (N ) is produced in an electrolyte by cathodic reduction of N2 gas. When water vapor is supplied into the electrolyte, and H2O react to produce NH3 and 0 N + 3/2H2O NH3 -I- 3/20 . The produced oxide ion (0 ) is anodically oxidized at the anode to evolve Oj gas. Thus, the overall reaction is expressed as 1 /2 N2 -f 3/2H2O NH3 -1- 3/4O2. The standard theoretical electrolysis voltage corresponding to the total reaction is calculated as 1.17 V at 300 C. The experimental results obtained using a bench-scale [Pg.523]
