A discussion of electrochemical reactors is available in books by Prentice (Electrochemical Engineering Principles, Prentice-Hall, 1991), Hine (Electrode Processes and Electrochemical Engineering, Plenum Press, 1985), Oloman (Electrochemical Processing for the Pulp and Paper Industry, The Electrochemical Consultancy 1996), and Goodridge and Scott (Electrochemical Process Engineering A Guide to the Design of Electrolytic Plant, Plenum, 1995). [Pg.53]

In order to evaluate and to compare different process options, performance criteria or figures of merit have been developed in the domain of electrochemical process engineering. For the reaction described in Equation (17.1) performed in a continuous fiow reactor in steady-state fiow, the reagent conversion 0, product selectivity a and material yield / are defined by... [Pg.462]

A stepwise procedure for reactor design adapted from that of MacMullin starts with a specified production rate (Fig. 5.13). Scale-up is defined by production capacity which is used to characterize the scale of the reactor. A modular approach to reactor design is common in electrochemical process engineering because electrodes have to occur in pairs (one anode and one cathode) and because there must be external electrical connections. Each electrode pair should be identical in performance. This (we shall see later) does not always happen, which leads to scale-up problems. [Pg.194]

Finally, we hope the reader will face the interesting challenges posed by the constantly developing field of electrochemical process engineering with confidence and will enjoy using this book as much as we have enjoyed writing it. [Pg.289]

An obvious strategy in electrochemical process engineering is to operate the reactor under mass transport controlled, limiting-current conditions, as the production rate should then be maximized. There are cases, however, when operation at or near the limiting current may not be optimal or even desirable as below ... [Pg.109]
