Electrical glass resistance increase

To improve the mechanical strength, sometimes a backing is applied. Examples are glass fabric (6,107) and parchment (136). The drawback is that the electrical resistance increases. Besides, on account of the difference in swelling between gel and backing microcracks can occur. 

Some nonhygroscopic materials such as metals, glass, and plastics, have the abiUty to capture water molecules within microscopic surface crevices, thus forming an invisible, noncontinuous surface film. The density of the film increases as the relative humidity increases. Thus, relative humidity must be held below the critical point at which metals may etch or at which the electrical resistance of insulating materials is significantly decreased. 

Typically, polyester resins are used for high-end applications that require excellent electrical and thermal resistance. When dimensional stability under load is more critical, glass fibers are incorporated to increase the heat distortion temperature and the stiffness of the part. Examples of glass fiber reinforced parts include electrical housings, electrical adapters, computer components, telephone housings, and light bulb sockets. When impact modified, polybutylene terephthalate can be injection molded to make car bumpers.
