The total energy efficiency of a CHP unit will have a distinct effect on the CO2 emission reduction. The less energy is lost to the environment, the less CO2 is effectively emitted per unit of final energy (electricity and heat), especially as the electrical efficiency is increased. On the other hand, the savings in comparison with a reference case will depend on the balance between heat and electricity production (as represented by the respective system efficiencies).
