Ehrlichia chaffeensis

The first transporter of this type characterised as an iron-supply system that functions in the absence of any siderophore was the Sfu system of S. marcescens [224]. Later, similar systems were reported from Neisseria gonorrhoea and Neisseria meningitidis, and have been detected by analysing the genomes of a variety of bacteria, e.g. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, B. halodurans, Campylobacter jejuni, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Halobacterium sp., H. influenzae,... [Pg.317]

There have been rare reports of an association between sulfonamide antibiotics and increased severity of rickettsial infections. Sulfonamides do not increase the pathogenicity of Ehrlichia species, but a case of human monocytic ehrlichiosis compUcated by ARDS has previously been reported in a patient who had taken oral co-trimoxazole. It has been speculated that oral co-trimoxazole, given for acne, may have contributed to the unusual severity of Ehrlichia chaffeensis infection that progressed to respiratory faUure in a previously healthy 16-year-old boy (166). [Pg.3516]
