Although the intermolecular selectivity of the nitration of alkylbenzenes by nitric acid in trifluoroacetic acid is controlled by both electronic and steric factors, it is argued that intramolecular selectivity is controlled by steric effects on transition state solvation. [Pg.290]

A depiction of a hypothetical potential energy surface for a reacting system as a function of two chosen coordinates (c.g., the lengths of two bonds being broken). Such diagrams are useful in assessing structural effects on transition states for stepwise or concerted pathways. An example of More O Ferrall-Jencks diagrams for j8-elimina-tion reactions is shown below. [Pg.490]

Substituent effects on transition mend-phosphorus bond formation... [Pg.989]

Thus, by employing general formulas for oscillator strengths, results can be obtained which are useful both in practical calculations and in studying the role of correlation effects on transition probabilities. [Pg.363]

Kenneth J. Takeuchi received his BS degree summa cum laude from the University of Cincinnati in 1975 and his PhD degree in chemistry from Ohio State University in 1981. He spent two years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill conducting postdoctoral research in chemistry. In 1983, he accepted a position as assistant professor of chemistry at the State University of New York at Buffalo he was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in 1990 and promoted to professor in 1998. Professor Takeuchi was a consultant with ARCO Chemical for five years and has been a consultant with Greatbatch, Inc. for the past five years. He is an author or coauthor of 75 refereed articles and more than 140 presentations at various scientific meetings. His areas of research include coordination chemistry of ruthenium, ligand effects on transition metal chemistry, electrochemistry, materials chemistry, and battery related chemistry. [Pg.259]

This solvation rule for 5n2 reactions can be useful in predicting the influence of a change in solvent on the structure of activated complexes. It is in agreement with studies involving leaving group heavy atom and secondary a-deuterium kinetic isotope effects, as well as theoretical calculations of solvent effects on transition-state structures. Possible limitations of this solvation rule have been discussed see [498] and relevant references cited therein. [Pg.173]

Intestinal transit rate is highly dependent on the motility state of the GI tract either fasted or fed partly due to the higher viscosity of chyme in the fed state. Blair and co-workers conducted a study in 20 men (energy intake 1272-5342 kcal/day) and found that higher calorific intake was associated with faster tran-sit. Exercise in moderation appears to have no effect on transit. [Pg.2870]

Diarrhea and constipation are associated with many illnesses and always produce concern to the effectiveness of therapeutic agents. Like gastroesophageal reflux, the etiology of these conditions is diverse and hence the effect on transit will vary. For example, in a group of constipated patients, a scintigraphic study using a water-soluble marker demonstrated a rapid... [Pg.2871]
