There are a number of relatively simple experiments with soap films that illustrate beautifully some of the implications of the Young-Laplace equation. Two of these have already been mentioned. Neglecting gravitational effects, a film stretched across a frame as in Fig. II-1 will be planar because the pressure is the same as both sides of the film. A recent design of the maximum bubble pressure instrument for measurement of dynamic surface tension allows resolution in the millisecond time frame [119, 120]. The result of all of the vibrational modes contributions to la (3 J-/3Ra) is a vector p-trans that is termed the vibrational "transition dipole" moment. Secondary Treatment and Uses. The vast majority of OSB panels are used "as is," without further processing or treatment. Primary uses are as wall and roof sheathing, floor decking, and other constmction panel uses in home and commercial constmction. OSB products are effectively filling in for the decline in plywood production. Electronic Applications. The PGMs have a number of important and diverse appHcations in the electronics industry (30). The most widely used are palladium and mthenium. Palladium or palladium—silver thick-film pastes are used in multilayer ceramic capacitors and conductor inks for hybrid integrated circuits (qv). In multilayer ceramic capacitors, the termination electrodes are silver or a silver-rich Pd—Ag alloy. The internal electrodes use a palladium-rich Pd—Ag alloy. Palladium salts are increasingly used to plate edge connectors and lead frames of semiconductors (qv), as a cost-effective alternative to gold. In 1994, 45% of total mthenium demand was for use in mthenium oxide resistor pastes (see Electrical connectors). [Pg.173]
