You see that this writer has many thoughts about families but they are rather jumbled up and her punctuation and grammar are imprecise. She is not editing as she writes. The piece reads more like speech than formal writing, as if she is talking to herself - which indeed she is. It is noticeable that the writer uses her own personal outlook to think about families in more general... [Pg.17]

I should have brought a trowel, she reflected. The earth was so shallow over the roots that it seemed doubtful if she could do as she meant and bury the book here. Besides, the dogs would dig it up. No luck ever attends these symbolical celebrations, she thought. Perhaps it would be as well then to do without them. She had a little speech on the tip of her tongue which she meant to speak over the book as she buried it. (It was a copy of the first edition, signed by author and artist.) (O, p. 291)... [Pg.64]

These myths arise from the work of H. W. Heinrich. Tliey can be found in the four editions of Industrial Accident Prevention A Scientific Approach. Although some safety practitioners may not recognize Heinrich s name, his misleading premises are perpetuated as they are frequently cited in speeches and papers. Analytical evidence indicates that these premises are not soundly based, supportable, or valid and, therefore, must be dislodged. [Pg.235]

Praat, developed by Paul Boersma and David Weenink at the Institute of Phonetic Sciences of the University of Amsterdam, combines a number of tools into a single environment primarily aimed at supporting research in the field of phonetics, but it turns out to be an extremely useful tool for musicians as well. It is particularly well suited for those interested in working with the human voice. It includes comprehensive speech analysis and synthesis tools combined with general numerical and statistical functions, plus facilities to produce a high-quality graphic data display. Besides its comprehensive editing... [Pg.208]

Unless otherwise indicated, all translations and paraphrases of ancient sources are my own. Greek authors who are edited in Oxford Classical Text editions are generally quoted from that series for other Greek authors, the text usually is that of the Bud edition. Unless the distinction is relevant to my discussion, I do not differentiate between speeches or other works properly bearing the name of an ancient author, and those of doubtful attribution. ... [Pg.12]
