A 1931 map indicates that 4.67 acres of the Spaulding property (part of the original 640 leased acres for the site) was sold to John Small III (Washingtonian Collection, D.C. Library). This was squares 1507 and 1509. Plan 30, dated 1937, indicates that this property (now listed as 4.69 acres) was sold to Olive M. Dwight. This property contained the three shell pits. A 1936 map of the construction development in the AUES area confirms that construction, which otherwise developed street by street, strangely bypassed these shell pits. Except for a steep terrain feature known as East Creek, all of the roads in this subdivision are designed to allow the lots to back up to each other. Only the area of POIs 20-23 has a parcel that is landlocked.

Weldon, Dwight G. Failure Analysis of Paints and Coating. Rev. ed. John Wiley Sons, 2009. There is a plethora of literature available on paints and paint technologies, but this book takes a unique look at how and why these coatings fad in service and how research can address these issues. 

Some records at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas and the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston are of importance. The White House Official File and the Ann Whitman File at the Eisenhower Library contain useful memoranda and correspondence on atomic energy and illuminate the close relationship between Lewis Strauss and the president. The White House Central Files and the President s Office Files at the Kennedy Library complement the records of the Bureau of the Budget and provide helpful documents on the often strained relations between the Joint Committee and the executive branch. Althouugh both libraries house valuable materials on military uses and promotion of peaceful applications of atomic energy, they have relatively little on regulatory issues.
