Dust control, prevention program

The procedural controls applicable for the preventive maintenance and repair of the hardware provide a mechanism for anticipating problems and, as a consequence, possible loss of data. Modem hardware usually requires minimum maintenance because electronic circuit boards, for example, are usually easily replaced and cleaning may be limited to dust removal. Diagnostic software is usually available from the supplier to check the performance of the computer system and to isolate defective integrated circuits. Maintenance procedures should be included in the organization s standard operating procedures. The availability of spare parts and access to qualified service personnel are important for the smooth operation of the maintenance program. 

Management must develop a respiratory program, then implement it and ensure that workers follow its requirements. OSHA requires that voluntary use of respirators, when not required by the company, must be controlled as strictly as under required circumstances. To prevent violations of the Respiratory Protection Standard, employees are not allowed voluntary use of their own or company-supplied respirators of any type. The exception is employees whose only use of respirators involves the voluntary use of filtering (nonsealing) face pieces (dust masks). 

Those studies conducted to date establish a basis for control of lead, pesticides, PAHs, PCBs, and allergens in indoor air and house dust. Track-in and accumulation of pollutants in rugs is an important source of exposure for children lead in dust is the major source of lead for most toddlers. The established benefits from reduced exposure to lead and allergens justify public education to reduce dust from track-in and inside sources as well as pollutants in indoor air. Action to control lead and allergens will reduce exposure to other pollutants in house dust and indoor air. It is possible that a nonregulatory education and outreach program with emphasis on public participation and pollution prevention will be more effective in the home than use of regulations and other traditional methods of pollution control.
