Dupont-Pioneer

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyvinyl acetate (PVA) are considered to be the first synthetic polymers created. Safe-handling cellulose acetate soon replaced explosive cellulose nitrate. Polyacrylonitrile and polyamides (Nylon) soon followed. American companies such as DuPont pioneered the development of plastics. England was responsible for the early development of polyester polymerization. [Pg.177]

From a historic point of view, metal-catalyzed or metal-promoted hydroamina-tions were first achieved with alkali metals [4]. The use of soluble transition-metal complexes as catalysts for the OHA reaction was pioneered by DuPont workers during the 1970s, the best results being obtained with Rh and Ir salts [5], Later, the finding that electron-rich Ir(I) species cleanly activated N—H bonds to form Ir-amido-hydrido species [6] opened the way to study the reactivity of these amides... [Pg.145]

Much of the research on fluorocarbons was pioneered by researchers at E. I. DuPont de Nemours Company. The technology quickly centered on derivatives of halocarbons. These gases, which were sold under the trademark Freoi , had the general formula C H FyCf, where x + y + z=2n +2. [Pg.49]

Besides addition polymerization, the other general way to prepare polymers is known as condensation polymerization or step growth polymerization. Much of the pioneering work on condensation polymerization was conducted by Wallace Carothers while he was employed by DuPont. He recognized that many natural polymers are formed from monomers with two reactive functional groups. For example, proteins are polymers of amino acids, which contain both amine and carboxylic acid groups. The formation of amide bonds is used to connect one monomer to another. Carothers s attempts to imitate nature led to a whole industry based on condensation polymerization. [Pg.1070]

With the development of man-made fibers, a methodology was needed to color these products. Many of the prepared dyestuffs for natural fibers did not impart color to the synthesized polymeric fibers. Hoechst (Germany), ICI (England), and DuPont (America) were the pioneers to develop dyestuffs to successfully color the man-made fibers. The dyestuffs used were either coupled to the polymer or chemically bonded to the polymer in the case of reactive dyes. These dyes are generally applied to the fiber in a water solution containing the dye and chemicals designed to assist in the process. [Pg.178]

Mycogen with Dow and Pioneer by Dupont) makes the perspective of plants as a chemical production platform a logical extension of these agrichemical businesses. However, seeds are also the dominant source of human nutrition. [Pg.2492]

DuPont began by commissioning a comprehensive inventory of the animals living in the river—a pioneering example of what is now called a biota survey. Two complete baseline surveys were carried out by the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, a year apart, and that work was repeated 18 months after the plant opened. At the mouth of the river, where shellfish were an important resource, the inventory was taken every six months. [Pg.138]

The closely related research on polyether chelates by Michal Szwarc and his co-workers led to a detailed determination of the structure and properties of carbanions in ion pairs and free ions. The fundamental principles which were developed and clarified in their numerous publications contribute to an understanding and interpretation of much of the polyamine chelate work as well. More recently the crown ether chelates, pioneered by Pederson and co-workers at the Dupont Laboratories, have given additional impetus to research on chelated alkali metal compounds. Crown ethers and amines are cyclic variations which can provide greater stability and specificity in complexation of cations, particularly the heavier alkali metal ions. [Pg.8]

Research work in the US potentially offers herbicide-resistant sunflower varieties that have been developed by non-biotechnological techniques. Express , being developed by DuPont and Pioneer, shows resistance to sulfonylurea herbicide. Another variety, Clearfield , is resistant to imazamox. The key decision on these products depends on the decision under Section 18 of the Environmental Protection Agency. Should Section 18 label be approved, Micogen CO. already has enough Clearfield seeds to plant 15000 acres next year. Other companies will have Clearfield seeds ready in 2003. Express is expected to be commercially available in a few years (The Sunflower, December, 2001). [Pg.134]
