Drugs for treatment

Uracil is used more effectively, in nucleic acid synthesis within a rat hepatoma than in normal liver. This observation appears to have stimulated the synthesis of 5-fluorouracil (1027) as an antimetabolite mainly because the introduction of a fluorine atom involves a minimal increase in size. In the event, 5-fluorouracil did prove to have antineoplastic activity and it is now a valuable drug for treatment of tumors of the breast, colon or rectum, and to a lesser extent, gastric, hepatic, pancreatic, uterine, ovarian and bladder carcinomas. As with other drugs which interfere with DNA synthesis, the therapeutic index is quite low and great care is required during treatment (69MI21301). 

The EU regulations permit veterinarians to treat animals with animal drugs that have not been authorised for that species or, alternatively to use human drugs, in situations where there is no authorised drug for treatment of the condition in the species.

Erythromycin is considered the optimal drug for treatment of Campylobacter infections. The rate of resistance of Campylobacter to erythromycin remains low. Other advantages of this drug include ease of administration, low cost, lack of major toxicity, and narrow spectrum of activity.14 The recommended dosage for adults is 250 mg orally four times daily or 500 mg orally twice daily for 5 to 7 days. For very ill patients, treatment with gentamicin, imipenem, cefotaxime, or chloramphenicol is indicated, but susceptibility tests should be performed.

Any migraine sufferer will willingly testify that this condition has little in common with the headaches to which the rest of mankind are subject. Recent medical studies too have shown fairly conclusively that, whatever the etiology of migraine, it is a condition quite distinct from the common headache. The use of estimates of treatment effect based on indirect comparisons when there is a common comparator has recently been shown on many occasions to agree with the results of head-to-head clinical trials (Song et al. 2003). Clearly a more challenging situation exists where there is not a common parameter, for example, in a recent study of the relative cost effectiveness of newer drugs for treatment of epilepsy (Wilby et al. 2003). In this study, Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo models for multiparameter synthesis were used (Ades 2003). Here, complex models were used to analyze a set of clinical studies involving a series of clinical alternatives, including the two alternatives of interest.
