Variants also undoubtedly occur in the enzymes and other proteins of individuals within a species. However, unless like haemoglobin pure samples of these proteins are readily obtainable, and unless there are easily recognizable differences in their properties such protein polymorphisms will only be detected in very special circumstances. They will, however, help to determine the inherited characteristics of the individual not only in terms of physical attributes but also susceptibility to disease, nutritional and drug intolerances and even perhaps such ill-defined qualities as intellectual and musical ability.
