The resistant nature of dormant cysts makes them likely candidates for dispersal via dredging operations, shellfish transplants, or boat ballast as well. Each of these is theoretically possible, but there is no direct evidence that demonstrates conclusively that such mechanisms have operated in the past.

Many coastal ecosystems have elevated levels of metals and radionuclides (14). Anthropogenic sources of stable isotopes of metals include sewage disposal plants, electroplating plants, and mining and dredging operations sources of radioactive isotopes include effluents from nuclear power plants and submarines, medical establishments, and uranium ore mining. The pollution from most of these operations results from routine or accidental discharges and are either continuous or episodic. 

Begin dredge operation in the new location by returning to Step 3. Simultaneously, and in accordance with the approved reclamation plan, reclaim overburden and tailings piles from previous work, according to Step 12 and 13. 

Indoor air concentrations of PCBs in 34 homes near New Bedford Harbor, Massachusetts were measured between April 1994 and April 1995 during the dredging of contaminated river sediments. PCB levels in indoor air samples ranged from 7.9 to 61 ng/m in homes closest to the dredging operation compared to more distant houses which had levels ranging from 5.2 to 51 ng/m (Vorhees et al. 1997). However, these indoor concentrations exceeded outdoor concentrations by an average ratio of 32, indicating the importance of indoor air concentrations to human exposures. Can the dredging operation be carried out clear of other commercial ship operations or floating plant movements ... 

Over the next few decades, massive dredging operations took place and the fill was used for the expansion of the downtown waterfront and the Navy bases close by.
