Down to Earth

During the week in Stockholm I also visited the University of Stockholm and the Royal Technological Institute. Subsequently, I also visited and lectured at Uppsala University and the Universities of Gothenburg and Lund. We were received everywhere with great friendship and hospitality, ending our most memorable trip in Copenhagen, from where we flew home. It was time to come back down to earth from the skies and resume our life. 

Polya s paper, translated here for the first time, was a landmark in the history of combinatorial analysis. It presented to mathematicians a unified technique for solving a wide class of combinatorial problems " a technique which is summarized in Polya s main theorem, the "Hauptsatz" of Section 16 of his paper, which will here be referred to as "Polya s Theorem". This theorem can be explained and expounded in many different ways, and at many different levels, ranging from the down-to-earth to highly abstract. It will be convenient for future reference to review the essentials of Polya s Theorem, and to this end I offer the following, rather mundane, way of looking at the type of problem to which the theorem applies and the way that it provides a solution. 

Alkali fuel cells containing KOH and platinum- and gold-coated electrodes were developed for the space program, but these are too expensive for down-to-earth vehicles. In addition, these cells require pure oxygen rather than CO2 -containing air.

How could all that be funded It would be ridiculous to suggest that comprehensive actions towards a cleaner economy might be supported by the miserable national budget. There is even less reason to believe that any down-to-earth effort to upgrade some specific facility and implement advanced technologies and state-of-the-art equipment might be funded from it. Furthermore, we can hardly rely on the assistance from the...

Composite materials have been acclaimed as the Materials of the Future. A key question is whether composite materials will always remain the materials of the future or if the future is here. Advanced polymer composites, once destined for stealth military aircraft or aerospace uses, are beginning to be used in down-to-earth structures, such as bridges, buildings, and highways. However, there are still considerable impediments to wider use, and composite manufacturers need to make great strides in the development and manufacturing of composite materials. 

It is easy to take a superior attitude to these down-to-earth homilies. But they simply express what people do intuitively all the time in order to manage their psychology.
